What is Beatport Link?

Beatport has launched its new subscription service that allows DJs to stream music from the retailers entire catalog (over seven million tracks) direct to a limited number of DJ software packages. The new DJ focussed streaming service has been closely developed with Pioneer DJ, allowing users to preview full tracks, in an all new ‘My Library’ section with unlimited re-downloads of any previously purchased track from your Beatport account - even offline if it’s a track you’ve purchased.

“The launch of Beatport LINK exhibits our commitment to creating the best possible experience for our expanding ecosystem of DJs, and we can think of no better partner than Pioneer DJ for the service’s first software integration," comments Beatport’s CEO, Robb McDaniels. "We are particularly excited to introduce the upcoming Offline Performance Mode, which firmly sets Beatport LINK apart from its competitors in the DJ market.”

Beatport are pitching this as the biggest record collection at your fingertips. Making the price of entry for wannabe DJ’s lower and whilst they’re not talking about it at all - repositioning the dominant retailer as a streaming service and moving away from actual tracks sales.

Beatport are offering curated playlists to access in genres - a move the big labels will like - generating more focus on big players and higher streaming revenue tracks and of course higher revenue for Beatport too.

Much of the marketing is aimed at aspiring DJ market and not professionals… “When you can’t count on perfect WiFi, Beatport LINK PRO and Beatport LINK PRO+ provide the world’s first offline streaming storage capability for DJs. With 50 or 100 tracks instantly available in your DJ performance software, you’ll never be interrupted. Combine with your collection for hours of extra music ready at your fingertips.

What file quality with Beatport Link offer?

Beatport’s music catalog will be available to stream as AAC 128kbps and 256 kbps quality) into Link subscription enabled devices. They also say you’ll need a 4G mobile network or WiFi unless you’re using the Link Pro or Pro + levels and have offline capability.

What platforms support Beatport Link?

Beatport Link has been developed with Pioneer DJ, and connects with Rekordbox or compatible Denon hardware.

What royalties do labels and artists receive from Beatport Link?

Specific payment rates per stream haven’t been released, although Beatport did explain “We create a royalty pool to share with all labels and then distribute based on number of plays. The per-play pay fee will change depending on subscriptions/plays.” Which as I understand it is how Spofity works currently - the more users playing music the more payments (not that that makes life any better for smaller indie labels necessarily).

What is Beatport Cloud?

Beatport Cloud is currently a beta version -  stability is good they say but the developers are adding new features each month for the next few months so have gone with the Beta Tag to give them room to iron bugs out I’d imagine.

The full Beatport Cloud service is included with a Beatport Link subscription, including unlimited download and the Needle Drop Player.

How much does Beatport Link cost?

Basic Beatport Cloud in $4.99 (USD + taxes) per month, Beatport Link is $14.99 (USD + taxes). If you’re a serious DJ then Link Pro officers offline use of 50 tracks for $39.99 (USD + taxes), while Beatport Link Pro + is a whopping $59.99 per month (USD + taxes) for 100 tracks offline.
